Scene Safety - 1/29/09

[7:12] Srilania Svoboda: Ok, please take all cross talk to IM, and all collar, etc commands to the secondary channels!
[7:12] Srilania Svoboda: Please also turn off or remove any radar, scanners, or sleep Mystitools so lag is reduced.
[7:12] Srilania Svoboda: Welcome to House of V's College of Kink! I'm the Newd Teacher, Srilania Svoboda, and your instructor for this lesson.
[7:12] Srilania Svoboda: While I have only been in Second life for about six months, I have been about in the real world for many years, as well as out in other realms of the internet, as a submissive, then became a Domme, which I have done for about 5 years.
[7:13] Srilania Svoboda: Feel free to join us Muffin, we are just getting started
[7:13] Srilania Svoboda: For any that need to leave early, all transcripts can be found at http://collegeofkink.blogspot.com
[7:13] ***MM***: *smiles* thanks I will as soon as things rez.. ㋡

[7:13] Srilania Svoboda: or
[7:14] Srilania Svoboda: "What's the number to 911?"
[7:14] Srilania Svoboda: Many people come to Second Life in order to experience BDSM. Some are quite knowledgeable, doing it for many years.[7:13] Srilania Svoboda: Feel free to join us Muffin, we are just getting started

[7:13] Srilania Svoboda: Today's class is on Scene Safety
[7:13] Srilania Svoboda: or
[7:14] Srilania Svoboda: "What's the number to 911?"
[7:14] Srilania Svoboda: Many people come to Second Life in order to experience BDSM. Some are quite knowledgeable, doing it for many years.
[7:14] Srilania Svoboda: Most, however, come with no knowledge, and not only pick up how to do things in Second Life, but try taking it to the Real World.
[7:15] Srilania Svoboda: There is nothing wrong with this, as we all start somewhere in everything, and Second Life is a relatively safe place to explore and learn.
[7:15] Srilania Svoboda: But, some people choose to reenact what is done to them in Second Life, paddling and beating and tying themselves up.
[7:15] Srilania Svoboda: There is nothing wong with this, but it does require a bit more caution and care.
[7:16] Srilania Svoboda: First thing is communication. Both sides should be made aware there will be real life components involved.
[7:16] Srilania Svoboda: Safewords are a MUST when doing this type of play. This is not just merely some animations smacking prims into someone's avatar.
[7:16] Srilania Svoboda: The person you're smacking with that flogger is on their own end, swinging a real flogger into their body as you do it to their avatar.
[7:17] Srilania Svoboda: A safeword allows for the submissive to quickly stop play in case there is a severe problem.
[7:17] Srilania Svoboda: If voice is not going to be used so verbal checkins can be done, then a non verbal system should be in place, such as hitting random keys and enter to let people know they are all right.
[7:17] Srilania Svoboda: Also, a lack of coherent responses stops play within a set timeframe can signal something is wrong, and play stops till the person becomes responsive again.
[7:18] Srilania Svoboda: During this time, do your best to apply aftercare, bringing them down from their subspace high.
[7:18] Srilania Svoboda: Also, before play, on the person doing the action's end, they have a few things they should do as well.
[7:18] Srilania Svoboda: For one, they should keep a phone handy, and always within reach, just in case an emergency.
[7:19] Srilania Svoboda: This is because one does not know if an emergency could arrise that would cause medical attention to be neccessary.
[7:19] Srilania Svoboda: And we really DO NOT want someone to crawl across the house to the phone, tied up and needing immediate medical attention
[7:20] Srilania Svoboda: And yes, you can need immediate attention if you have an accident and do something to yourself.
[7:20] Srilania Svoboda: A wrong jerk, twitch, or movement could cause you to dislocate joints, cut too deeply, nick a vein or artery, or even be unable to get loose.
[7:20] Srilania Svoboda: Having a small emergency first aid kit nearby, within reach, is also a good idea.
[7:21] Srilania Svoboda: Even if you just wind up just letting it sit there and collect dust, it is something you should always on hand.
[7:21] Srilania Svoboda: You never know when you'll wake with a bad headache, and need some pain relievers, let alone emergency ice packs, bandages, burn ointment, or other items.
[7:21] Srilania Svoboda: Even vanillas should consider keeping a first aid kit by the bed
[7:22] Srilania Svoboda: If you are going to be doing any play where you are going to be hitting, poking, or other things where you cannot see unaided, keep a small mirror.
[7:22] Srilania Svoboda: Sometimes, you could hurt something, such as break the skin with a whipping cane, and not even realize you have done so.
[7:23] Srilania Svoboda: And a small mirror is cheap to free. We girls get a lot of makeups with little mirrors in them, and you guys have to know at least ONE woman you could get a dead compact from
[7:23] Srilania Svoboda: There are a lot of restraints out there. A lot of people like doing some kind of bondage in these scenes.
[7:24] Srilania Svoboda: To do rope bondage safely, there are already good videos out there. Twisted Monk has a good series on their website.
[7:25] Srilania Svoboda: http://www.twistedmonk.com/
[7:25] Srilania Svoboda: Also, a web search for Two Knotty Boys will yield a torrenting site with their entire video set.
[7:26] Srilania Svoboda: After writing this, I found a site like YouTube that hosts the entire TKB series
[7:26] Srilania Svoboda: http://www.livevideo.com/media/tag/two-knotty-boys.aspx
[7:27] Srilania Svoboda: And yes. I PERSONALLY use both resources to refresh things for myself before I do any real life scening.
[7:28] Srilania Svoboda: Both resources are free, and will help teach the basics of rope bondage better than I could in Second Life.
[7:28] Srilania Svoboda: However, the best knot to tie off with, especially for single play, is a slip knot.
[7:28] Srilania Svoboda: This is a knot that leaves a little tail that can be pulled with ease to release the knot, and is excellent for emergency releases.
[7:29] Srilania Svoboda: Other, more complicated knots should be avoided, as they can become impossible to open if the restrained person is high or in severe pain.
[7:29] Srilania Svoboda: And yes, the endorphins flodding your system from play can cause a "high" similar to doing some drugs
[7:30] Srilania Svoboda: And we would not want to be trying to untie a square knot while you're drunk or stoned, so why would you want such when doing a scene?
[7:30] Srilania Svoboda: Also, a pair of specialized scissors can come in handy, to cut restraints that are difficult.
[7:31] Srilania Svoboda: EMS Safety scissors, runs about $5-15 US, and generally a good idea to have anyways
[7:31] Srilania Svoboda: It is important to note that one should never ever ever restrain both hands to the point they cannot get loose.
[7:32] Srilania Svoboda: There have been instances where a person has been restrained alone, and have been unable to free themselves and have even died because they were unable to call for aid.
[7:32] Srilania Svoboda: This was dramatized in the novel Gerald's Game, by Stephen King.
[7:32] Srilania Svoboda: Those not into horror, it is about a woman who goes to her summer house with her husband for some kinky sex.
[7:32] Srilania Svoboda: It's in the late fall, so noone is around the area. He has a heart attack and dies after handcuffing her to the bed.
[7:33] Srilania Svoboda: Mind you, each hand to a bedpost, so she was almost spread eagle
[7:33] Srilania Svoboda: Most of the story is about her trying to get free, and what she does to get free, almost dying in the process.
[7:33] Srilania Svoboda: Which does bring us to locking restraints.
[7:34] Srilania Svoboda: Handcuffs, chains, or leather restraints with working cuffs are nice for scenes at a safe place.
[7:34] Srilania Svoboda: NOT in a transitional scene from Second Life to Real Life.
[7:34] Srilania Svoboda: If the restrained person gets into a panic, or is too dazed to handle working the key in a lock, they could come under serious harm.
[7:35] Srilania Svoboda: Best bets are either use restraints with a quick release safety catch, or use an alternative to locking restraints, such as quick clips, or rope.
[7:35] Srilania Svoboda: When self restraining, try to keep one hand free, so you can not only handle emergencies better, but can also do things to yourself.
[7:35] ***LM***: it is ez to pick cuffs
[7:36] Srilania Svoboda: Yes, it is easy. But, in a panicked state, or dazed and befuddled from shock, it's a task that goes from easy to impossible
[7:37] ***MM***: *nods*
[7:38] ***LM***: me been lift in cuffs for two days
[7:38] Srilania Svoboda: Try drinking enough booze to the point you are almost blacking out, THEN try to pick a lock, or even use the key with it. There's people that can't even do it AT the legal limit for driving, which should tell you why it's not wise
[7:39] Srilania Svoboda: During a scene, it is also important to keep any supplies and emergency care items on hand.
[7:39] Srilania Svoboda: If you're doing fire play, have an extingusher.
[7:39] Srilania Svoboda: Needle play? Bandages and antiseptics should be on hand.
[7:40] Srilania Svoboda: But, riskier edge play, such as knife play, breath play, needle play, and the like SHOULD be avoided unless there is someone on hand in Real Life to help you if there should be a problem.
[7:40] Srilania Svoboda: Once a scene is done, Aftercare is critical.
[7:40] Srilania Svoboda: Blankets should be on hand, as well as some kind of food or drink.
[7:41] Srilania Svoboda: Sugars are best, as they deliver quick energy to help with dealing with subdrop, and blankets help if you're cold.
[7:41] Srilania Svoboda: During aftercare, keep things gentls, slow, and soothing.
[7:41] ***LM***: this one wishes you A/all well and thank you for the rope info Ma'am
[7:41] Srilania Svoboda: If voice is being used, talk softly, with no grunting, growling, or hardness to your voice.
[7:41] ***MK***: be well LostDJ-san, thank you for coming.
[7:42] Srilania Svoboda: If no voice is being used, the best thing is a good cuddle setup, and talk soothingly.
[7:42] Srilania Svoboda: Finally, once things have settled, make sure you get proper feedback. Not just that day, but a few days later.
[7:42] Srilania Svoboda: Mind you, a good cuddle set for aftercare is a good idea either way
[7:42] ***MK*** nods
[7:43] Srilania Svoboda: You don't want to sit there and start another session if they are still really sore from the last one.
[7:43] Srilania Svoboda: And you don't want to do something that they have found to be a hard limit.
[7:43] Srilania Svoboda: Next weeks class will be Kink on the Cheap: getting free or cheap BDSM gear for Real World Applications.
[7:43] Srilania Svoboda: Questions, opinions, feelings?
[7:43] Srilania Svoboda: Please feel free to feed the Teacher. I eat Linden Dollars as well as most types of blood, and the occasional stray victim!
[7:44] Srilania Svoboda: All transcripts can be found at http://collegeofkink.blogspot.com
[7:44] Srilania Svoboda: For Class times and topics, Y/you would always check the Search/Events and look for College
[7:44] ***EE***: i think this is the best lecture i've ever eard here
[7:44] Srilania Svoboda: Well, I've heard Miss Pirate give some good ones as well
[7:44] ***MK*** smiles
[7:45] ***MM***: thank you , Miss Srilania, very nice lecture. *grins8
[7:45] Srilania Svoboda: I do this every week at the same times, 12:30am on tuesday mornings, and 7am thursdays
[7:45] Srilania Svoboda: thank you Muffin
[7:46] ***MM***: your welcome Srilania
[7:46] Srilania Svoboda: Wow, no questions at all?
[7:46] ***EE***: you were clear
[7:46] ***EE***: consise
[7:46] ***EE***: and u came with resources
[7:46] ***MK*** nods
[7:46] ***XD***: it was very good, very thorough
[7:46] Srilania Svoboda: Well, next week's will have more resources too
[7:47] ***MK***: yes i think thats the only reason i haven't asked a question even after hearing the class twice. (despite the log off issue the first time)
[7:47] Srilania Svoboda: Yes, I encourage my own girls to come to every class they can
[7:47] ***MK***: oh here's a question
[7:47] ***YU*** smiles
[7:47] Srilania Svoboda: Yes geisha?
[7:48] ***MK***: Wax play, there's different kinds of wax and candles and such. anything on the types you should get for it? or woudl any be just as safe as the next?
[7:48] Srilania Svoboda: Yes, that is a good question
[7:49] Srilania Svoboda: the BEST candles to get are plain white paraffin wax candles
[7:49] ***MK***: ahh, white?
[7:49] Srilania Svoboda: believe it or not, those packs of emergency candles that are butt ugly? those are actually one of the safest
[7:49] ***MK*** nods
[7:49] ***MM***: easy way for Me to remember that is, paraffin is the wax used in hand dips.. for warmth and moisturizing.
[7:50] Srilania Svoboda: Some colorants they use in candle wax can actually burn worse.
[7:50] ***MK***: i was wondering about that
[7:50] ***MK***: red is used so often it seems though
[7:50] ***MM***: and fragrances too can increase the heat of the wax.
[7:50] Srilania Svoboda: If in doubt, test it on the inside of your arm WELL IN ADVANCE of any play
[7:50] ***MK*** nods
[7:50] ***MK***: good idea
[7:51] Srilania Svoboda: Easier to treat a small burn on your arm than all over your breasts and cooter
[7:51] ***XD***: lol
[7:51] ***MK***: how far should the candle be from you and your body?
[7:52] Srilania Svoboda: That can vary widely on the candle used, the preference of the person getting dripped, even the tempurature of the room
[7:52] ***MK*** nods
[7:52] Srilania Svoboda: ALWAYS do some test dripping to be sure
[7:52] Srilania Svoboda: And I will say this flat out.
[7:52] ***MK***: that and if you have hair like a blanket. i wouldn't want it too close.
[7:52] Srilania Svoboda: NEVER EVER EVER EVER use BEESWAX or NATURAL TALLOW candles for wax play
[7:53] ***MK***: never heard of tallow.
[7:53] ***EE***: why?
[7:53] Srilania Svoboda: Tallow is a type of wax made from renered fat
[7:53] ***MK***: O,o
[7:53] ***XD***: ah ok
[7:53] ***MK***: sounds like it'd be similar to a greece burn.
[7:53] Srilania Svoboda: Both waxes retain their heat far longer than their less dense cousin, paraffin, and burn at much higher tempuratures
[7:54] ***EE***: ah
[7:54] Srilania Svoboda: that's exactly what wax play from tallow candles is
[7:54] ***MK***: ee
[7:54] ***YU***: ouch
[7:54] Srilania Svoboda: Excatly
[7:55] Srilania Svoboda: I did try to keep this one generalized, as I tend to hit the safety points with each topic
[7:55] ***MK***: needle play being one of the ones you sould do in the presence of others i know, but what would be the best type of needles? anything further would require some resources.
[7:56] Srilania Svoboda: Well, depending on what state you live in, you can readily get needles from your pharmacy. Some states require a prescription though
[7:57] Srilania Svoboda: But worst case, most farm supply stores also carry needles that can be used for needle play
[7:57] ***MK***: so medical needles.
[7:57] Srilania Svoboda: Just be sure to avoid ones for horses or cattle, as their tips are not as sharp, and can hurt like hell
[7:57] ***MK***: ee blunt needles O,o
[7:57] ***XD***: i have needles but most people i know are terrified of them
[7:58] Srilania Svoboda: Yes, you don't want to be using sewing needles, as you can't be sure how sharp they are, and you'd need to properly sterilize the needles for safety
[7:58] ***XD***: no, i don't use those..
[7:59] Srilania Svoboda: But for quick poke pokes or scratching, diabetic lancets, designed for pricking one's finger to get a blood sample is a good alternative
[7:59] ***XD***: i have mediacl diabeticneedles from the pharmacy.. as i do have a bit of a blood fetsih
[7:59] ***MK***: i would think you still need to sterillize medical needles too. unless they're safe enough form the purchaze? what about disposal and reusal?
[7:59] Srilania Svoboda: Just be sure to cleanse the skin beforehand with betadine, iodine, or alcohol
[7:59] ***MK***: purchase*
[7:59] ***XD***: never reuse them
[7:59] Srilania Svoboda: NEVER reuse medical needles.
[8:00] ***MK*** nods
[8:00] ***MK***: i didn't think so.
[8:00] Srilania Svoboda: Dispose in a sharps container. Most pharmacies sell these for pretty cheap
[8:01] Srilania Svoboda: But, on details about needle play, I'll do a class specifically on it
[8:01] Srilania Svoboda: Any further questions?
[8:01] ***MK***: those are the only ones i can think of for now.
[8:02] Srilania Svoboda: well, thank you all for coming, I hope to see you all next week, either tuesdays at Midnight thirty, or thursdays at 7am
[8:02] ***MK***: thank you Aijin.
[8:02] Srilania Svoboda: All times are SLT, by the way
[8:02] ***XD***: thank you, it was a great class
[8:03] ***XD***: too bad not many showed up, they would have learned a lot
[8:03] ***YU***: great class Aijin better then befor :D
[8:03] Srilania Svoboda: thank you geisha
[8:03] Srilania Svoboda: Yes, sometimes it takes a while, and people also just read the log of the class instead
[8:03] ***XD***: ah yes
[8:04] ***XD***: i try and go to the website and read some of them too
[8:04] Srilania Svoboda: Please note I also do private lessons, and that information SHOULD be on the notecard giver sign out there about classes
