Basic Roleplay - 12/30/08

[0:47] Srilania Svoboda: Ok, please take all cross talk to IM, and all collar, etc commands to the secondary channels!
[0:47] ***OE***: hi ***IM*** *hugs
[0:47] Srilania Svoboda: Please also turn off all radars and mystitools to reduce lag.
[0:47] ***oS***: hey ***IM***good to see you again
[0:47] Srilania Svoboda: Welcome to House of V's College of Kink! I'm the newd teacher, Srilania Svoboda, and your instructor for this lesson.
[0:48] ***IM***: Hello, Sir ***oS***. Good to see you too.
[0:48] ***OE***: greetings, Srilania
[0:48] Srilania Svoboda: Hello. Class is starting
[0:48] Srilania Svoboda: While I have only been in Second life for about six months, I have been about in the real world for many years, as well as out in other realms of the internet, as a submissive, then became a Domme, which I have done for about 5 years.
[0:48] Srilania Svoboda: For any that need to leave early, all transcripts can be found at http://collegeofkink.blogspot.com
[0:48] Srilania Svoboda: Today's lesson is Basic Roleplay
[0:48] Srilania Svoboda: Or
[0:49] Srilania Svoboda: "How do I become an Imperial Sex torture droid who molests Gorean Tribbles on a budget without getting arrested?"
[0:49] ***AW*** giggles
[0:49] Srilania Svoboda: First off, what Is RolePlay?
[0:49] Srilania Svoboda: No, not Pole Play, you pervs! Roleplay.
[0:49] Srilania Svoboda: Roleplaying was something everyone has done at one point in their lives. When you were kids, it was called Let's Pretend.
[0:50] Srilania Svoboda: You could lose yourself as this person or that, and have fun.
[0:50] Srilania Svoboda: Sadly, many forget the simple delights of this, and have to learn it all over again.
[0:50] Srilania Svoboda: "But why do we need roleplay in this world of poseballs and sex toys and scripts? Surely I can just buy things and do what I want"
[0:50] Srilania Svoboda: Well, for one, all those things can get pretty expensive.
[0:50] Srilania Svoboda: A good array of scripted items, toys, scenery, and all could easily run you way over 10,000 linden dollars just for gear alone.
[0:50] Srilania Svoboda: Add in a nice SIM, textures, buildings, or other things, you could easily be spending a LOT of money.
[0:51] Srilania Svoboda: Also, no matter what you do, the settings of Second Life are limited.
[0:51] Srilania Svoboda: Even with unlimited funds, there's no way to get the full range you can from roleplaying.
[0:51] Srilania Svoboda: Not to mention there's better ways to spend money.
[0:51] Srilania Svoboda: First thing in Roleplay is COMMUNICATION!
[0:51] Srilania Svoboda: make sure all involved are on the same page, and know limits, kinks, and any special information.
[0:52] Srilania Svoboda: Once in a Roleplay scene, there are 2 avenues of communication, either in Character (IC) or Out Of Character (OOC).
[0:52] Srilania Svoboda: In Character means you are in your role. You ARE that spy trying to get the secrets from the queen, or that person hiding from the law.
[0:52] Srilania Svoboda: But, sometimes you need to talk outside that role. Out of Character is the way to show this
[0:52] Srilania Svoboda: There are 2 ways to handle this. The first, which works well for a 2 person scene, is just open an IM window.
[0:52] Srilania Svoboda: This allows all OOC discussions to take place seperately from IC roleplay in the main channel.
[0:53] Srilania Svoboda: But say it's a group, with several people?
[0:53] Srilania Svoboda: The easiest and most accepted method is to mark it as OOC
[0:53] Srilania Svoboda: There are scripts that work to show this in Second Life.
[0:53] Srilania Svoboda: However, most use ((this)) to show OOC talk, like so.
[0:53] Srilania Svoboda: ((brb bathroom break))
[0:53] Srilania Svoboda: this lets others know you are speaking not as that tentacle monster with an anal fetish, but as the person behind it.
[0:54] Srilania Svoboda: You can use OOC to help with problems in a roleplay scene, object to something being done, even just let someone know you have to AFK a little bit to eat.
[0:54] Srilania Svoboda: When you are in a scene, please remember to not use netspeak.
[0:54] Srilania Svoboda: U and R are great to use on a cell phone to text someone, but not when in a rich scene.
[0:55] Sasami Zwilling is Offline
[0:55] Srilania Svoboda: If you have ever sat reading a book, and found U and R being used a lot, you would likely be hurling it across the room.
[0:55] ***IM*** laughs
[0:55] Srilania Svoboda: So, spend the extra tidbit of energy, and type out You and Are.
[0:55] Srilania Svoboda: Emoting is an essential part of Roleplay. As they are a large enough topic, this is taught as a seperate class.
[0:55] ***OE***: greetings, Sovereign
[0:55] Srilania Svoboda: Two things to avoid when roleplaying are metagaming and godmoding.
[0:56] ***ST*** smiles
[0:56] Srilania Svoboda: Metagaming is where one takes information outside the scene, and incorporates it into the scene.
[0:56] ***ST***: Greetings ***OE***
[0:56] Srilania Svoboda: For instance, if one person emotes a thought, unless you are roleplaying a telepath, your role will not know this information.
[0:56] Srilania Svoboda: Such as this example
[0:57] ***RC*** smiles
[0:57] Srilania Svoboda thinks ***OE*** is looking tasty, and considers how she'd look tied to a cross
[0:57] ***OE***: *perks*
[0:58] Srilania Svoboda: If ***OE*** was my partner in the scene, her character could NOT know this
[0:58] Srilania Svoboda: So for her to react as if she knew this, would be an example of metagaming
[0:58] Srilania Svoboda: While there are times it can be a good thing, as sometimes one has to metagame to fix a scene, it should be something to avoid as much as possible.
[0:59] Srilania Svoboda: Learning the difference between good and bad metagaming will be in advanced roleplay
[0:59] Srilania Svoboda: Godmoding is the other thing to avoid in roleplay.
[0:59] Srilania Svoboda: Godmoding is play where no matter what is done, the person godmoding always comes out unharmed and standing.
[0:59] Srilania Svoboda: For example, a character may be afflicted with a disease only curable by rare ingredients, yet another character is "lucky" enough to find these ingredients in ten minutes.
[1:00] Srilania Svoboda: It is also used to describe perfect equipment or posessing limiteless power, such as unbreakable armor, guns that never run out of ammo, etc.
[1:00] Srilania Svoboda: In these cases, it is either used to cheat out of a scenario that had been unfolding, or to give someone an edge up on more established players.
[1:01] Srilania Svoboda: Like if I tried to drown jenjen in a bathtub, but suddenly she states she had mermaid ancestry and can breathe water, then when trying to roast her, she says she has demon blood and can handle heat as well, without ANYTHING stated beforehand
[1:02] Srilania Svoboda: One last thing to be careful about is real emotions.
[1:02] Srilania Svoboda: Sometimes, people can get so into their roles so deeply that they react as if they ARE their character.
[1:02] Srilania Svoboda: If someone seems to be getting really upset in a roleplay scene, talk to them in OOC, and make sure they are all right.
[1:02] Srilania Svoboda: Again, communication is key.
[1:03] Srilania Svoboda: Next week, we will be working on more advanced methods of emoting, helping people to make their emote sing.
[1:03] ***OE***: i have seen this real time character play ..
[1:03] Srilania Svoboda: Questions, opinions, feelings?
[1:03] ***OE***: neighbors .. everyother weekend got together.....
[1:03] ***LR***: Mistress Srilania may i ask a question?
[1:03] Srilania Svoboda: Aye
[1:04] ***OE***: start from friday nite till sunday noon
[1:04] ***LR***: what do you do if you type your thoughts out and someone acts as if they can read your mind and refuses to adhere to the rules of this
[1:04] ***OE***: the one that went out of role was considered killed and out of game
[1:04] ***OE***: last one standing won
[1:04] ***OE***: these were navy kids
[1:05] Srilania Svoboda: Aye, i have seen that too ***OE***. Though out of character is a great way to avoid problems in roleplay scenes
[1:05] ***OE***: reminded me of dungeons and dragons game
[1:05] Srilania Svoboda: Lieba, the best thing one can do is either ignore it and go on, or initiate OOC communication and work it out
[1:06] ***LR***: thank You Mistress
[1:06] ***IM***: Sometimes this one just doesn't emote thoughts.
[1:06] Srilania Svoboda: Though one can pre empively nip that in the bud by not emoting a thought, unless that thought is going to affect your expression, or actions
[1:07] ***IM***: girl can't think of a reason to emote a thought unless it was to be understood by someone.
[1:07] Srilania Svoboda: Well, I have been in RP scenes where one or more were telepaths
[1:07] ***IM*** nods
[1:08] ***OE***: like what Srilania said about me on cross.. took me by surprise
[1:08] Srilania Svoboda: I was in an arrest scene today where the thoughts caused her to have an action, and hint she had a hidden weapon
[1:08] ***OE***: my first reaction was *perk*
[1:08] ***OE***: which is true to my character
[1:09] Srilania Svoboda: But unless you were a telepath, ***OE***, you could not have known what i was thinking
[1:09] Srilania Svoboda: but, there are good metagaming times too. It'll be covered in the Advanced roleplay class
[1:10] ***OE***: truth.. but.. i visioned You seeing me not only there but being put on it
[1:10] ***LR***: lrkiss ***oS***
[1:10] SheSkull Vlodovic is Offline
[1:10] Lieba's collar: Lieba gives ***oS*** a big kiss.
[1:10] Srilania Svoboda: heehee. well it got your attention, didn't it?
[1:10] ***OE***: absouletly
[1:10] ***oS***: sleep good good my little puppy
[1:11] Srilania Svoboda: Any other questions? I know a dry and basic topic, but they will be getting better with the advanced classes
[1:11] ***OE***: g'night Liebra
[1:11] Srilania Svoboda: All transcripts can be found at http://collegeofkink.blogspot.com
[1:11] Srilania Svoboda: For Class times and topics, Y/you would always check the Search/Events and look for College
[1:11] Srilania Svoboda: And, as always, I accept tips in the form of linden dollars, or blood.
